What is a flood?
A flood is an overflowing of a large amount of water beyond its normal confines onto what is normally dry land. A flood can be the result from the following:
Overflow of inland or tidal waters
Unusual and rapid accumulation or runoff of surface waters from any source
Water main breaks
Fire hydrant malfunction
Collapse of a pool
Mudflow - collapse of land along the shore of a body of water as result of erosion or undermining caused by waves or currents of water exceeding anticipated cyclical levels
Because homeowner’s policies do not cover damage from floods, it is necessary to purchase a separate flood policy. Flood insurance is provided through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). This is a federal program from which property owners may purchase insurance to protect against loss from flooding. Please contact a personal line specialist to receive a flood insurance quote. There is a 30 day waiting period before flood insurance becomes effective.
